A.POP x ELSEWORLD

Modular installation for Elsewhere in Brooklyn, NY.

Conceptualized as a post apocalyptic sci-fi fantasy, the installation includes a custom 70ft inflatable “Wormhole” object and 15 unique hanging 4x7ft “Dystopian” sculptures spanning across the venue’s main and side rooms.

Designed and constructed with durability, modularity and compact storage in mind, the system features bespoke hardware and rigging points to be easily and quickly installed / de-installed around the club’s busy scheduling, for a monthly “Elseworld” event. It is then able to be broken down to a roughly 10x6ft storage area.

Custom inflatable concepted by A.Pop (Ana Popescu), in collaboration with Abraham Rodriguez (3D modeling) and Paul Raffaele (inflatable skin design) .

A.POP x SMANGTASIA

Site specific installation for Smangtasia music festival in Upstate, NY.

Installations focused around the festival’s day time line-up within an open air pavilion, and featured an ancillary sound exhibit in collaboration with Chris Mayes-Wright. Upon sunset, the installation’s four totem structures featured custom lighting. Designed to reverberate with the natural haze and fog of the mountain valley, these works became amorphous beacons of light, striking yet gently pulsing into the night’s sky.

Within the pavilion installation, lighting artist Kip Davis’s colorful display of LED tubes created a multi-sensory experience, playfully in conversation with the organic shapes and movement of A.Pop’s sculptures.

A.POP x RINSED

A.Pop (Ana Popescu) served as Co-Founder and Creative Director of the illustrious roving DIY-warehouse parties RINSED, from 2010 - 2015.

Hugely inspired by the iconic New York City nightclub, AREA, RINSED was a thematic underground event focused on complete audience immersion. From notoriously “demented email blasts” (Vice), equally deranged and intricate art installations, to expertly curated musical lineups mixing emerging artists and legendary acts, the three founders (A.Pop, Dan Wender, Blacky II) worked their individual strengths to create true 360˚ experiences. In a time when trapeze dancers and steampunk-dressed fire breathers were the norm, RINSED instead created environments referenced by art history, current and historical pop culture, sociological and psychological themes, indie art films, and 90's club culture to name a few. RINSED created a much needed space of inclusion and uninhibited exploration in a time when the underground dance scene was only just beginning to rise back up from the ashes of the Giuliani/Bloomberg “crackdown era”.

As Creative Director, A.Pop designed and built all installations and sets, curated art performances and 'happenings’ during the events, designed and ran live stage and space lighting, and often created unique videos and projections coinciding with each event’s theme.
