Ana Popescu (b. 1988) is a multi-media visual artist working and living in Brooklyn, NY. Her work, informed by the dichotomy of her background as an immigrant from revolution-era Bucharest, Romania who spent her subsequent years growing up in sunny South Florida - explores the tensions between her lived experience. Nostalgia and newness, a push and pull between that of the synthetic and organic, the boundaries between meticulous methods and un-calculated spontaneity.

Ana’s process-driven practice of layering colors and materials points back to years of cloud watching and stucco analyses. A deeper examination into the contradictions of what is real and what is a superficial reality, created around us. A brightly colored natural world with subtle nods to the crumbling chaotic dystopia underneath.

Recurring throughout the work, a final layer of high gloss serves two purposes. To seal the piece into a sort of synthetic time capsule, impervious to UV and compostability—a day-glowing relic. And secondly to spotlight, in all its shining plastic splendor, each movement and imperfection caught along the way. No longer able to retract, erase, or delete. No room for regret.

Education: BFA Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY, 2010
